Why Should I Be Baptised?
1. To follow the example set by Christ: "At that time Jesus came from Nazareth and was baptised by John in the river". See the Gospel of Mark ch1 v9.
2. Because Christ commanded it: "Jesus said, 'Go then, to all people everywhere and make them my disciples, baptise them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and then teach them to obey everything that I have commanded you". See The Gospel of Mathew ch28 v19-20.
3. It demonstrates that I really am a Believer: "We know that we have come to know Him, if we obey His commands". See the First Letter of John ch2 v3.
What Is The Meaning of Baptism?
1. It illustrates Christ's death, burial and resurrection: "Christ died for our sins . . . He was buried . . . and He rose again", see 1st Corinthians ch15 v3-4. "For when you were baptised, you were buried with Christ, and in baptism you were also raised with Christ", see Pauls Letter to he Collossians ch2 v12.
2. It illustrates your new life as a Christian: "When someone becomes a Christian they become a brand new person inside. The old life has passed away and a new life has begun!", see 2nd Corinthians ch2 v12. "By our baptism then, we were buried with Him and shared His death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead . . . so that we may live a new life!", see the Letter to the Romans ch6 v4.
Baptism doesn't make you a Christian; only your faith in Christ does that. Baptism is like a wedding ring - it's the outward sign of the commitment you have made in your heart. See Pauls Letter to the Ephesians ch2 v8-9.
Why Be Baptised By Immersion?
1. Because Jesus was baptised that way: "As soon as Jesus was baptised, He went up out of the water", see the Gospel of Matthew ch3 v16.
2. Every Baptism in the Bible was by immersion. Examples: " . . . then both Philip and the man went down into the water and Philip baptised him. When they came up out of the water . . . " See the Acts of the Apostles ch8 v38-39.
The word "Baptise" actually means "to dip under water".
Who Should Be Baptised?
Every person who believes in Christ. A Believer is someone who has realised that their sin seperated them from God. They have given up all efforts to reach God through good works or religious activity. Thet have concluded that Christ's death on the cross for their sins is the only thing that can bridge the gap between them and God. A Believer is someone who has decided to trust Christ alone for his or her salvation. If you have come to that point in your spiritual journey, then you are ready to be baptised. See Acts ch2 v41, and ch8 v12-13.
What About Children?
The New Testament contains no examples of baptism when the person being baptised did not request it. All instances of baptism followed an individual's own personal decision to trust Christ alone for their salvation. See Acts ch2 v41, ch8 v12 and ch10 v47-48. At NewSong we wait until the child is old enough to believe and understand the true meaning of baptism before we baptise them. When a child makes a decision for Christ, we gladly baptise them in the Christian faith. At NewSong we also offer parents the opportunity to dedicate their children to God rather than baptise them.
When Should I Be Baptised?
As soon as you have believed. Acts Ch2 v41 says "Those who believed were baptised that day!". Acts Ch8 v35-38 is a similar reference. .
Does This Mean It Has To Be Immediately?
No, what the bible is teaching is that baptism should follow your decision to become a believer. There is no reason to delay. If you wait until you are "good enough", you will never feel ready for baptism.
When Does NewSong Hold Baptism Services?
We hold Baptisms as frequently as necessity demands; this usually works out to be about twice per year. During the colder months these are held at a local Baptist Church in Bromsgrove. During the summer months Baptisms may be arranged at a local outdoor swimming pool. Usually the services are held on a Sunday afternoon and are followed by a time of church family celebration. Your Baptism is a time of witness to your friends and family and is a great opportunity to invite them to "Come and See".
What Do I Wear?
Dress in clothes you don't mind getting wet! Women should wear a thicker style shirt such as a sweatshirt and either shorts or jeans. There will be a changing area for men and women at the venue. You will also need a towel and a change of clothes to wear afterwards. Arrive about 20 minutes before everyone else to receive some last minute instructions.
Will I Have To Say Anything?
Part of the Baptism process involves preparing and writing out a few paragraphs describing how and when you decided to trust Christ for your salvation. This is known as your personal testimony. Baptism is the public profession of your faith in Christ. Therefore, during the service either you or someone else will read excerpts from your testimony. These testimonies play a significant and meaningful role in the service. Believers are encouraged and reminded of their own baptim, whilst seekers are challenged by hearing about the spiritual journey of others.
