- Have you ever believed when nothing made sense?
- Have you ever jumped when you couldn't see the bottom?
- Have you ever trusted when trust seemed so crazy?
These are just some of the questions you’ll find yourself asking after seeing “Word on the Street”, an inspirational musical about the Christmas story.
Word on the Street is a contemporary Christian musical about Mary, Joseph, and God's gift of grace and faith. Uncle Zack (Zachariah) and Aunt Liz (Elizabeth) are also confused about the timing of the birth of their baby (John the Baptist) in their old age. It is true to the Biblical Christmas story - but absolutely nothing like your typical "Christmas Pageant" put on by so many churches around the world during the Christmas season.
Word on the Street, written by the famous Willow Creek Community Church in Chicago, is an unusual and different take on the Christmas story because it's not only set in modern times but it deals with how Mary and Joseph must have felt and reacted to the news that all of sudden they were having a baby at a very inappropriate and most inconvenient time! This Christmas musical deals with Mary and Joseph's faith and ends before the actual birth of the baby with a touching "Silent Night" scene
Mary displays many reactions as she moves from a normal, carefree girl to the growing realization of the full impact on her life as the mother of God's child. We've seen Mary in later life receiving this same news; at the baptism of Jesus where she "hid these things in her heart" and at the foot of the cross. But it is touching to see how she must have reacted to the unexpected news and awesome obligation when she first heard of it.
Joseph shows love and concern for Mary and yet, doesn’t really buy into the whole "dream" story. After a little intervention from up above however, he changes his mind and, as they say, "the rest is history."

You may think that a Christmas musical doesn’t normally have comedy, but this show has it all. It is inspirational, entertaining, lively and humorous. Look out for the Angel Gabriel who has to have a little talk with Joseph when he doesn't accept Mary's pregnancy with enthusiasm.
The show uses lighting, great set design, upbeat music, contemporary songs used in unique ways, video and a live band to bring this story to the stage.
During most Christmas seasons we see many versions of "A Christmas Carol" and every version of the "Santa story" imaginable, so it's refreshing to see that the story of Mary and Joseph has a fresh, new angle that is so beautiful and relates to our everyday life. You'll leave this production thinking about how the main characters must have felt and how hard it was to choose to have faith in God when it wasn't convenient or the popular thing to do -- just as we do today . . .
